Beware the multitasking trap

Beware – Mind Bomb ahead!

The Autumn of the Multitaskers

Neuroscience is confirming what we all suspect: Multitasking is dumbing us down and driving us crazy. One man’s odyssey through the nightmare of infinite connectivity. […] We concentrate on the act of concentration at the expense of whatever it is that we’re supposed to be concentrating on.

This very interesting article goes a long way to explaining what we all secretly know – less really is more. Less interruptions, less email, less instant messaging, less podcasts, take all these away and just be mindful of the present. The now. The person, task or job in front of you. Do these one at a time and you will be more efficient for it.

One at a time, serial processing is now my personal productivity goal for 2008. For too long have I tried to do way too many things at once and deep down I feel drained. Stretched. Slower. This has changed since reading the article. Already I feel more competent than I have in a long while.

For me the next few days will be challenging, as I adopt my new mantra – “be mindful of the present.” I am certain this lesson has been taught by many of the great thinkers throughout the ages. Now it is my turn to take heed and benefit from this great piece of wisdom.

Talk to your neighbours?

January 7, 2006

We’re lucky to have moved into a good neighbourhood here in Sydney – once again we’ve had a neighbourhood holiday get together. Sure, it is really only five houses worth, but at least we know each others’ names!

You also get to find out stuff – like three doors up from us had sparks and arcing coming from their electricity main line a couple of nights ago. Pity I missed that one, if only for the photo opportunity 😉

Happy New 2006!

January 1, 2006

It is time to start learning new things. Again. Yes, I know I dubbed last year as the year of learning, but that kinda got sidetracked, so here we are again 🙂

At least I’m starting by learning a new blogging tool (and it really does look nice from in here…)

On a side note, I’m sitting at home at 1pm in sweltering heat – it is over 32 degrees (that’s 90F for you who prefer such quaint systems 🙂 and that is INSIDE – the weather dept are forecasting 41C today in Sydney – again for you other folks that is over 105F.

I’m getting the hell out of the house now, and I hope the guinea pigs survive the heat.

Happy New Year!

January 17, 2005

This year, for us, will be The Year Of Learning Things. All things considered, The Year Of Living Shamelessly worked out pretty well – there was a wedding and some performances just for starters.

Oh, and we also have to *implement* some of the things we learn 🙂

Happy New Year!

January 2, 2004

We’ve dubbed 2004 as The Year Of Living Shamelessly, so take that and run with it!
